Still from ‘Tram Journey through Southampton’, 1900 (BFI)

We provide an interdisciplinary forum for the University's research in Film Studies and other screen media.

The Centre for International Film Research (CIFR) at the University of Southampton is a showcase for international film and screen studies research developed by our leading academics, postgraduates and visiting speakers. Committed to engaging the public and producing research with an impact on academia and beyond, members of the CIFR are leaders in a variety of film and screen research areas.

CIFR’s international scope corresponds to my recent research on the intersections between architecture and cinema, on questions of exile and migration in relation to film, and on the history of film studios in Germany.
Professor of Film Studies
CIFR provides a home for my research on contemporary Hong Kong cinema, Chinese-language film industries, and film festivals, which has led to special screenings of Hong Kong films, jointly presented with the Hong Kong Film Festival (UK) and the Harbour Lights Picturehouse (Southampton).
Associate Professor
CIFR is a valuable network that has allowed me to establish ongoing collaborations with scholars from different disciplines who work on moving images and share my interests in television and the visual cultures of science.
