Mass spectrometry involves the study of matter through the formation of gas phase ions that are characterised by their mass, charge, structure and/or physio-chemical properties.
Mass spectrometry (MS) is a powerful analytical technique used to identify and quantify pure compounds or simple and complex mixtures.
MS is used across a wide range of applications and is commonly coupled to chromatography, e.g. GC-MS, HPLC-MS and SFC-MS. Mass spectrometry plays a major in industry, medicine and academia, e.g. in drug discovery, clinical screening, fundamental MS research and research support for chemistry.
The Chemistry mass spectrometry facility is equipped with a range of modern instruments to underpin a vast array of research topics e.g. for chemistry, chemical biology, inorganic chemistry, supramolecular chemistry, oilfield chemistry and research into the applications of separation science and mass spectrometry.
Specific specialisms are the application of hyphenated approaches (GC-MS, HPLC-MS & SFC-MS) to deliver solutions across all application areas.
For most SMEs, the cost of investment in expensive equipment is prohibitive and the use of the analytical facilities within Chemistry at the University of Southampton allows them to undertake high-level scientific research.
Over a number of years, the mass spectrometry group at Chemistry within the University of Southampton has developed a strong research support function for clients outside the University sector. Clients include companies in the pharmaceutical and petrochemical industries, custom synthesis houses, government agencies and other universities.
