About the project

The Internet of Things (IoT) is changing the way we live, work, and interact with our environment. In order to realise its predicted scale of trillions of devices, while also supporting global green energy targets, sustainable technologies are required throughout the stack. This includes everything from efficient energy storage and generation, semiconductor devices, and compute, through to green communications and networking, efficient data processing, and edge intelligence.

Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD studentship studying aspects of these future green and sustainable IoT devices and systems. It will focus on and cut across:

  • power electronics
  • communications
  • computer architecture
  • artificial intelligence

The members of the supervisory team will be selected from the Centre for IoT and Pervasive Systems, and matched to the specific focus of the research project, and interests of the student. The application of the work will be aligned with the activities of the centre and may involve industrial partners looking to translate the research into innovations. This could target application domains in the area of sustainability, such as monitoring electrical power systems, efficient industrial processes, or a circular economy.

Successful candidates would have a strong background in electronic engineering, computer science, or a related discipline. You will join the School of Electronics and Computer Science which is ranked 1st in the UK for Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Guardian University Guide 2022), within the University of Southampton which is ranked in the top 1% of universities worldwide.

You will be supervised by world leading researchers in their field and join an exceptional and vibrant team of postdoctoral researchers and other PhD students. We will support the development of your future career and give you opportunities to expand your experience and knowledge beyond the topic of the PhD project.
