We work with partner organisations to tackle global marine and maritime challenges. From developing green technologies to influencing government policy, our experts from across the University are improving quality of life and the environment.

Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute (SMMI) is the largest entity of its kind in the world, with expertise in everything from naval architecture to the social sciences. Our 350 specialists work across academic divides, and in partnership with external organisations, to address issues in the natural ocean environment (marine) and human use of the sea (maritime). We foster new research collaborations, educate the next generation of maritime leaders, and generate knowledge and intelligence for businesses, governments and organisations.

Emerging technologies of sensing, robotics and big data have immeasurable potential to improve the safety of engineering operations in the ocean.
