full page | the poem (enlarged)
The poem immediately precedes its secular
equivalent in the MS. The opening four lines of each stanza, rhyming abab, are laid out in
pairs across the page; and after the first stanza, the abridged form of the refrain is
written on the right-hand side of the page, opposite the final couplet of each stanza.
Both are probably space-saving devices. |
