About Us

Showstoppers is the musical theatre society at the University of Southampton. Each year we produce at least five shows: the main and small shows, the non-auditioned winter revue, the summer show and the manic 24-hour musical.

Last year we kicked off with a promotional performance of The Last Five Years, an emotionally powerful and intimate musical about two young people who fall in and out of love. Once More, With Feeling!, our winter revue, explored all kinds of different emotions in daily life. Our small show Songs for a New World provided an excellent opportunity to take on a more major role and to broaden musical theatre horizons. Our main show was Children of Eden, a show examining the age-old conflict between parents and children. The summer show was Our House, featuring a jam-packed catalogue of Madness hits. We also went to Edinburgh Festival Fringe for the first time in Showstoppers' history with the original show Lillia, written by our very own Stephanie Amies.

This year, the award-winning new show Fresher the Musical was the first to raise the curtain, telling the hilarious story of five newcomers to university life. The Final Countdown will be our unauditioned winter revue, focussing on a theatre company's battle against time to put together a winning performance. Our small show will be Sunday in the Park with George, a show seeking the balance between life and art among artists. The main show will be The Wedding Singer, a tongue-in-cheek musical comedy. The summer show and the Edinburgh show will be decided towards the end of the year.

Our shows have a reputation for being of the highest quality, and a number of our members have gone on to become professional actors after leaving university.

Showstoppers was nominated for the Best Society at the SUSU Excellence in Volunteering Awards in 2007, 2008 and 2010. As well as putting on shows, we are a highly social society - we organise loads of socials including theatre trips, balls and of course pub crawls. We are a very welcoming society and aim to give members the opportunity to expand their talents and learn new skills, as well as provide a lively social group within the Students Union.
