Norman Del Mar, Desmond Shaw-Taylor, and Anna Mahler Collections

The core of the Norman del Mar Collection is the conductor's personal collection of 5000 early 78s, now greatly expanded through the purchase and donation of additional materials (now totalling some 30,000 78 RPM and vinyl recordings). Cataloguing of this large collection is ongoing and email enquiries concerning the holdings may be directed to archives@soton.ac.uk. The sound materials in the collection are complemented by extensive holdings of CD releases of historical recordings in the Library's Music Resources Room, and by extensive holdings of discographic journals from the private library of Desmond Shawe-Taylor; many of these include autograph annotations. The Anna Mahler Collection is a unique collection of Gustav Mahler's conducting scores with autograph annotations; highlights include his reorchestrations for Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.

Fellowships and Research Opportunities

The University of Southampton offers an annual Archive Studentship tenable in any of the disciplinary areas in which the Hartley Library has holdings; for details visit http://www.soton.ac.uk/~history/pg/archival02.htm. In addition funding is available through the Hartley Institute for scholars in any field in the humanities and social sciences wishing to come and use the Del Mar Collection; fellowships will normally be available both on a non-stipendiary basis and for periods of up to three months attracting subventions at up to £1,000 per month. Applications should be addressed to Dr Chris Woolgar, Head of Special Collections, Hartley Library, and contain a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, a research proposal, a recent publication or completed piece of work and the names of two referees. It is a condition of funding that the research project should not form part of a candidacy for a degree or other qualification. Informal enquiries are welcomed. The collections are of course available for research students registered at Southampton; among its postgraduate courses, the Music department at Southampton offers MMus programme in Musicology, Composition, and Performance, as well as the MPhil and Ph D.
