Dolci sospiri ardenti

Source:  Luzzaschi, 1576

Setting:  Luzzaschi, IIIa5, 1583

Dolci sospiri ardenti,
che dal bel petto fuore
fermate uscendo i furiosi venti;
ditemi sel suo core
punge amoroso strale chio giuro per amore
di cantar lieto senza sdegno et ira.
Ben e felice lalma
per chi lalta cagion del mio gran male
dolcemente sospira.

Sweet burning sighs
which emerging from a beautiful breast
stop the furious winds;
tell me if her heart
is pierced by the loving arrow that I swear for love
in happy songs without disdain or anger.
Blessed and happy the soul that sighs sweetly for the great reason of my suffering.
