Go vertical!
Southampton University Model Aircraft Club (SUMAC) is an exciting new club aimed at those who are interested in electric powered radio-controlled helicopters.
Advances in battery technology and
modern materials have allowed these micro-sized helicopters to be
built small enough to fly indoors and with cyclic and collective
pitch control exactly like their full sized counterparts. Watching
the experts fly these micro helicopters makes it look easy but in
fact it takes patience and practice to learn even a basic hover!
There is no substitute for guidance from more experienced pilots,
and this is one of the reasons this club has been formed
A small indoor venue has been secured suitable for new pilots to
learn control of the helicopters and we are also planning to
purchase a basic club training model which will allow members to try
the hobby before they decide whether to buy a basic setup
themselves. The hobby can be immensely satisfying and highly
addictive, and all staff and postgraduates are welcome to come
along. SUMAC is affiliated with the
British Model Flying Association and University of Southampton
