Southampton University Judo Club

Information for 2023/2024 Academic Year

Are you looking for a fun and dynamic martial art to help keep in shape? This website has all the information you should need to find out about the club, and this page provides a summary of how to get started with judo. But if you have any questions do email us at judo@soton.ac.uk

The best way to find out what is involved in Judo is to come along and try it for yourself. Why not come and chat to us at the Bunfight on Thursday 28 September in the Jubilee Sports Centre. Everyone is welcome to come along and try a session to see if you enjoy Judo. Don't worry if you miss the very first sessions of term, its not unusual and you can catch up very quickly.

Give it a go! The first Thursday session of the year on October 5th will be run as a taster so that you can come down and have a fun intro to Judo to see if it is for you. Book the session on the UoS Sport application and come on down to the Martial Arts room at 6pm.

COVID Safety

There is no escaping the fact that Judo is a close contact sport, but we will be taking measures to try and minimise any risk to us all from attending sessions. It is really important that everyone adheres to the guidelines for attendance so that we can keep sessions running through the academic year

Everyone attending a session must:

  • Wear clean training kit (whether a judogi or general sports kit)
  • If you have any cold / flu / COVID-19 symptoms you MUST NOT train
  • If you do test positive for COVID-19 after training with us, inform the club so that we can let potential contacts know

All sessions take place in the Martial Arts Suite - you can find this on the very bottom floor of the main SUSU building, on the way to the old sports hall.

The club gets started for the 2023/2024 academic year in the first week of term. This means that the first Tuesday session for those who already have some judo experience will be on October 3rd at 8pm and the first of our Thursday beginner sessions will be on Thursday October 5th at the slightly earlier time of 6pm. Details of the different sessions available are on the Training Times page.

The Membership page outlines the requirements for membership. Club membership is an annual fee with no per session fee, but you do need to have either a full annual or SportsPass level Southampton Sport membership because the Martial Arts Suite is managed by the Southampton Sport department. Rates vary depending on whether you are a student, staff or external to the university.

We look forward to seeing you at a session. Recommended clothing for your first few sessions is a strong long sleeved top that you don't mind being pulled around (an old sweatshirt is ideal), and shorts or sweatpants
