| Hans is a Professor of Computational Modelling in the School of
Engineering Sciences at the University of
Southampton. He received his undergraduate degree
"Diplomphysiker" in physics from the University of
Hamburg (Germany) and completed his PhD studies in the
High Performance Computing Group at the department of
Electronics and Computer Science in Southampton.

| His research
interests are computer simulation methodology
and applied computational simulation. In particular, his
group studies multi-physics and multi-scale phenomena in
(nano-) materials and other systems, often in
cross-discipline collaborations. He is working on
post-processing, visualisation, analysis and storage of
scientific data sets. His activities include software
and algorithm development. |  |
| Current projects
include micromagnetic modelling of a variety of
systems in different research projects and
collaborations, and development and provision of the
open-source micromagnetic simulation framework Nmag that his
group has developed. A number of other simulation tools and packages
are provided through his group's activities. |  |
Hans is teaching the
subject of "Computing and scientific computation" to
students at graduate and postgraduate level. This
includes numerical analysis and simulations methods,
programming on different levels, and the use of
appropriate software engineering tools and
techniques. He has been awarded the Deputy Vice
Chancellor's Teaching Award (GBP 1000) twice for his innovative
redesign and delivery of the engineering computing
curriculum. |  |
| He is leading the Computational Modelling Group at the university of Southampton. He is the co-director of the Institute for Complex Systems Simulations and is directing the learning and teaching of scientific computation in the institute's Doctoral Training Centre. He is a chair of the university's strategic research group on complexity in real world contexts, and involved in a number of other activities.
