Welcome

Welcome to the University of Southampton Astronomy
Society's website! Our member's experience ranges from people who
like looking at stars to people studying astronomy.
Who?
We welcome anyone and everyone, especially those with an interest in astronomy or even an interest in what's out there.
No prior exerience or knowledge is necessary, just keen interest and enthusiasm. We do offer guidance and teaching in
observing the night sky and also in the use of telescopes.
What?
If the sky is clear we head to the physics building to pick up
telescopes and take them out onto the common to observe the sky.
If the weather isn't good enough to go observing we still meet up, but instead we do a range of activities from going
for a drink in one of the local pubs (usually the Stag's head, the crown or the Highfield), building Rockets, or going on
society trips to the Union Cinema.
When and where?
We meet every Monday during term time at 8PM in the internet
cafe area just inside the SUSU concourse area.
If you're interested in joining or just seeing what it's like,
then come along to one of our meetings. For the full year's membership
we charge £2.50, but we don't require the fee immediately, so
you can see if you like it before committing.
We have a yearly trip to London (usually just before the Christmas
holidays) to visit the science museum or the natural history museum, as well as other trips to the Winchester
Observatory and a camping trip to the New Forest.
We also head up to Greenwich to look at the royal
observatory

First Social of the Year |
19/10/10
Its Social time! This Wednesday (19th) we are having our first social of the year and it will be a good old
fashioned pub crawl from the stags to the Hobbit but with an astronomical twist, as there are different
challenges to complete during the night. We are meeting at 7pm at the Stags Head pub and then going on
down to the Hobbit pub about 8pm where we're going to spend the majority of the night, stopping at Varsity
on the way. If you can't make it to the stags between 7 and 8 but want to join us later on at the Hobbit or
Varisty, then your more than welcome to; if you want to find out where we are during the night my number is
07599036490, just text me and I'll let you know.
Looking forward to seeing as many of you there as possible!
P.S. Don't worry if your not a heavy drinker or don't want to drink too much, we have non-alcoholic challenges
as well to be completed on the night so still come along and join in :-).

New Website! |
14/06/09
The website has been overhauled and is up to date. More material
coming now that the basic framework has been completed.
|
Telescope Building |
13/06/09
We met up and started work on the telescope. Unpacked the glass
for the main lens and prepared the glass we will use for grinding
the lens into shape.
Aside from this we had a barbeque, watched terminator and enjoyed
the good weather. Later on when the inevitable english summer rain
kicked in, we all retreated inside to finish watching the movie.
After this we all watched a couple of Jonathan Creek episodes, including
the one where Sam appears.
As the holidays have now begun and no more exams need to be worried
about, we decided that we will try to meet up during the week in
the evenings to continue work on the telescope. |
