Swine flu

Information and guidance for University staff and students

The University of Southampton continues to operate normally and we are closely monitoring both the international and local situation in relation to swine flu.

Over the summer we saw a few isolated cases of swine flu. However, as is the case with many other institutions around the world, we are advised that numbers are likely to rise now that the new term has started.

The University is in regular contact with colleagues at the UK’s Health Protection Agency and is following their guidance.

All staff and students are asked to follow the advice that has been issued on how to avoid and help limit the spread of infection. In addition, we urge all students to enrol with a General Practitioner as soon as possible when you arrive in Southampton.

It is important to stress that the majority of cases of swine flu in the UK have been mild. However, it is essential for each of us to be aware of the symptoms and to take the necessary simple hygiene precautions to avoid spreading infection.

Should anyone display flu-like symptoms, our instruction is to stay at home and call the National Pandemic Flu Service on 0800 151 3100. For more details follow our swine flu checklist.

The latest news about swine flu is available on the NHS website.

Travel information
As a precautionary measure, we strongly advise all staff and students to follow the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s travel recommendations.

Some authorities have introduced medical screening for the Swine Flu virus (H1N1) for passengers arriving on international flights. It is possible that containment measures may be introduced or changed with no notice. You may be required to undergo further tests if you show flu-like symptoms.

If you are looking for advice on how swine flu might affect your travel plans, you should consult the travel advice on the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website.

What is swine flu?
Influenza A (H1N1), known as swine flu, is a form of influenza that originated in pigs but can be caught by, and spread among, people. In the current global swine flu outbreak, in addition to Mexico, human infection with swine influenza A (H1N1) viruses has also been confirmed in the US, Australia, Canada, the UK, and other countries.

To prevent the spread of influenza, individuals are advised to wash hands thoroughly with soap and water on a regular basis and cover their nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing. Anyone developing symptoms of influenza-like illness should seek medical attention. This should be done by phone initially, if possible.
