Please note: this course has been discontinued and October 2009 will be the final intake of students.

What is population sciences?

At the heart of the discipline of population sciences (or 'demography') are three key components of human populations: births, deaths and migration.

You will consider many topical questions during our distinctive BSc Population Sciences programme, such as:

  • How will the growth of the world's population affect us?
  • Why are fewer people getting married these days?
  • Why are more children born out of wedlock?
  • Why were birth rates in 2001 at an all time low in Britain?
  • What policies should governments be following to deal with the many challenges presented by national and world population issues?

All the questions above require you to understand how births, deaths, and migration affect change and development in populations. It is also crucial to understand the social, economic, geographic and biological factors that influence population characteristics.
