How to Apply

If you wish to apply to the School of Engineering Sciences to pursue any type of postgraduate study (taught or research), you will need to complete the following:

  • Postgraduate application form
  • Two reference requests
  • Ethnic origin form (for all applicants permanently residing in the UK)

You will also need to send supporting documents:

  • degree certificates/transcripts
  • proof of English Language (if applicable).

For PhD or EngD applications, please also send a personal statement (300 words) to include:

  • Why do you want to do a PhD/EngD?
  • What skills or qualities can you offer that make you suitable for postgraduate study?

All supporting documents can be uploaded to the online application, and/or sent directly to the School, preferably by email (or fax or post).

For PhD applications it is important to match yourself to an appropriate supervisor and project when you apply. Please view the Research Group web pages to identify which research group areas you wish to work in, and if possible identify possible supervisors who work in your area(s) of interest. This must be indicated on your application form, to ensure your application reaches the appropriate academics quickly.

An overview of the Research Groups can be found in School of Engineering Sciences, Annual Research Report, downloadable in PDF format or a hard copy is available by request from the address below.

Application forms should be completed online via the University of Southampton Application form page. Alternatively you may request a postgraduate application form pack.
