There will be no effect on undergraduate courses or teaching provision as a result of the fire which last week destroyed some of the internationally-renowned research facilities at the School of Electronics and Computer Science.
Lectures continued as normal this week, despite the fact that access to some of the School’s buildings has been restricted temporarily, and the leading-edge undergraduate computer and electronics labs were not harmed. There will be no effects of any kind on the School’s undergraduate programmes in Computer Science, Electronics and Computer Engineering, Electrical and Electromechanical Engineering, and Information Technology in Organisations.
‘All our courses will be delivered as normal,’ said Professor Mark Nixon, Director of the School’s UCAS admissions team, ‘and I want to reassure all applicants for 2006 entry and beyond that there will be no changes to our provision or facilities for undergraduate courses, or to the high level of undergraduate education to which we are committed and for which we have such a strong reputation.’
Because of the fact that the School’s Zepler Building is closed for the time being, the UCAS visit day programme has been temporarily suspended, but is likely to resume on 29 November. All applicants are being communicated with from the School on an individual basis.
‘We will still be offering students a superb teaching environment,’ said Professor Nixon. ‘What is particularly apparent to all applicants who visit us is the high quality of staff and students and the lively and positive atmosphere in the School. It is this, combined with the world-class quality of our researchers and academic staff, that ensures our high status in national and world ratings. We are fortunate that we are all still here and can move forward for the future.’
