Who we are

Highfield Campus

Leading research and a vibrant community of mathematicians

Mathematics at Southampton unites the study and teaching of pure and applied mathematics, statistics and operational research into one leading department. Renowned for the quality of our research, we are one of the broadest communities of professional mathematicians, students and support staff in the UK.

Through our research, which spans a range of topics from the optimum delivery of healthcare to the stability of electricity networks, we aim to contribute to the solutions for some of today's key challenges.

The range and reach of our work means that our academics are working at the forefront of their fields, and this is reflected in the quality of our teaching. We can offer broad and flexible degree programmes and the option to go on to study at the cutting edge of research.

With over 60 active research and training links with industry, we can offer our students the opportunity to specialise in areas of direct interest to future employers.
