University Region in Second Life
Come and explore the University of Southampton virtual campus
The University has recently established a campus space within the virtual world platform of Second Life. The campus, whilst representing the natural landscape of the real world campus, has been left largely undeveloped, primarily to encourage educational and research based activities to be created by our University community.
LATEU actively support educational projects on the island and coordinate activity. Current LTEF projects in Second Life include Chemistry, Medicine, Humanities (Modern Languages and Archaeology) and a small amount of activity from WSA. Further details will be appearing on the LTEF pages of this site shortly.
What is Second Life?
Second Life® is a 3-D virtual world created by its residents. Since opening to the public in 2003, it has grown enormously and today is inhabited by millions of residents from around the globe.
Anyone can become a resident of Second Life, just by creating an avatar and logging on. Once you have entered the virtual world you will find a vast array of people, cultures, entertainment and experiences to interact with.
What is the University campus like?
The campus, contains several key areas, the first of these is a Welcome Centre, the hub of the island where people can post their interests and ideas for activities.
The campus also houses an auditorium for events and lectures and a campus scale model. The remaining space has been divided up into sandbox areas for Schools and groups to work and experiment in.
