ILAWS: the Institute for Law and the Web at Southampton

The world has been transformed by the arrival of the Internet. In 1969, four computers were connected to the fledgling ARPAnet; today, it is hard to imagine the world without email and the Web.

In 2006, the School of Law at the University of Southampton and Thomas Eggar LLP embarked on an innovative and ground breaking new partnership to sponsor and support ILAWS, the new Institute for Law and the Web.

ILAWS is proud to have, as sponsors, Thomas Eggar LLP, a recognised leading law firm in the South, offering both Commercial and Private Client services. The IT/e-trading & IP pages of the Thomas Eggar website can be found at:

ILAWS was established to work on the legal issues, problems and opportunities associated with the Internet, the Web and digital technology. It is a unique interdisciplinary research centre that combines legal expertise in key domains such as information technology law, e-commerce, IT law and public policy, and intellectual property law. The Institute combines a brief to look at the crucial current issues for commerce and government, alongside cutting-edge "future-gazing" to discover what the legal issues of the future will be.

The University of Southampton boasts the Web Science Research Initiative, a joint enterprise with MIT, lead by Wendy Hall and Nigel Shadbolt of Electronics and Computing Science at Southampton, who are also Associates of ILAWS; and Tim Berners-Lee, the founder of the web. ILAWS is working closely with the WSRI and thus has the remarkable opportunity to participate in the creation and regulation of “Web 2.0”, and perhaps, “Law 2.0”?
