Position: Professor of Modern Jewish/non-Jewish Relations. Head of the Parkes Institute.

Research interests

Urban Studies (the history and perception of cities such as Berlin, Tel-Aviv, or Odessa), Topography (the role and meaning of space in history and culture, the history of Jewish forms of settlement), Migration (the history of German Jews in Palestine/Israel, but also in Britain and the United States), and Archives (the study of connections between historical events and the archival collections in a European context). In general, I am trying to build an inter-disciplinary bridge between my own field of (German) Cultural Studies – Empirische Kulturwissenschaft – and other fields related to Jewish history and culture.

Publications

My last book brings together two of my main fields of interest. “Das Ich der Stadt. Debatten ueber Judentum und Urbanitaet” (Goettingen: Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht 2005) discusses the role of urban culture for Jews in Europe, especially in Germany, and the image of the Jewish “city-dweller par excellence” – a social construction with echoes in anti-Semitism, in Zionism, but also in academic disciplines such as Geography or Cultural Anthropology.
