Geography and Environmental Science Seminar

Abstract

KNUST is the second largest public University in Ghana. It was established by a Government Ordinance on 6th October 1951 and officially opened on 22nd January 1952. The University has a student population of 88,688, over 40% of whom are women.

KNUST seeks to advance knowledge in science, technology and humanities through creating an environment for undertaking high quality research that is relevant to the challenges facing our country and region, such as climate change, food security and sustainable development. We link this with high quality teaching, as well as entrepreneurship training and community engagement to improve people’s quality of life.

KNUST has a significant number of research collaborations with Universities, Institutions and Governments both in Ghana and abroad. We are well linked regionally in West and Southern Africa, as well as with Universities in Australia, North America and Europe. The purpose of this visit is to extend these collaborations to the University of Southampton, and particularly with SoGES.

Dr Obeng is a Visiting Academic in SoGES (13 April – 13 May 2024) as part of our drive towards enhancing international collaborations. In this talk, Dr Obeng will give an overview of KNUST, focusing on some of the key work that is conducted in his department of Geomatic Engineering that is home to colleagues working in and with Remote Sensing and GIS. Dr Obeng’s department covers teaching, research, training and consultancy for other parts of the University such as Forestry and Maritime departments, as well as for various industry and government departments. Dr Obeng will then present some proposals for international collaboration in teaching, research and knowledge exchange with SoGES colleagues and beyond. These include PhD supervision, student exchange, and collaborative research amongst other things.
