Aims

The Pre-Sessional Courses at the University of Southampton are open to international students who are planning to come to the UK for undergraduate or postgraduate study at University of Southampton. The courses are designed for international students who:

  • need to improve their language skills as a condition of entry to University of Southampton or
  • have already met the English language conditions for entry to university, but who want to find out more about using English academic study and the forms and expectations of academic life in the UK in order to get a head of start before starting an academic programme.

The courses aim to:

  • help you develop the English Language skills you will need to follow a degree course or undertake research at a British university
  • help you to develop the necessary cultural and study skills for effective learning through the medium of English
  • introduce you to life in Britain and to British culture
  • give you a chance to 'settle in' to the British academic environment before starting your programme of academic study at Southampton.

Students who successfully complete the pre-sessional programme (i.e. achieve an appropriate overall final grade) are considered to have met the English language requirements of the University of Southampton.

Our courses

Preparatory Course with Course A
Dates:  3 June 2010 to 17 September 2010 (5 weeks)
Normal Entry Requirements: IELTS 5.0, IBTOEFL 61
Course Fee:  Tuition and accommodation fees (.xls) 
Content: The Preparatory Course provides approximately 20 sessions of supervised work per week plus assignments and self-study. Particular emphasis is placed on the academically important skills of writing and reading. This course is designed to provide more general English study for those students who need to improve their proficiency before moving on to Course A.
Your progress on each course is measured by continuous assessment. Your final course grade is made up of an evaluation by your tutors of all the work you do on the course (both in class and for homework). There is normally also a placement test at the start of the course and a short achievement test at the end of your course.
Course A
Dates:  07 July 2010 to 17 September 2010 (10 weeks)
Normal Entry Requirements:  IELTS 5.5, IBTOEFL 71
Course Fee: Tuition and accommodation fees (.xls) 
Content: Course A is intensive with approximately 28 sessions of supervised work per week, plus assignments to be done outside class. Classroom work on these courses focuses on academic writing, listening and note taking, academic reading (where you will have an opportunity to deal with your own specialist subjects in the classroom), grammar, pronunciation, and speaking skills. The weekly programme includes lectures on subjects of academic interest and life in Britain, given by members of the University and other specialists. The course will also concentrate on the techniques of study and teaching in use in Britain (e.g. seminars, essay writing, note taking, and use of the University library).
Course B
Dates: 12 August 2010 to 17 September 2010 (5 weeks)
Normal Entry Requirements: IELTS 6.0; IBTOEFL 81
Course Fee: Tuition and accommodation fees (.xls) 
Content: Course B is intensive with approximately 28 sessions of supervised work per week, plus assignments to be done outside class. Classroom work on these courses focuses on academic writing, listening and note taking, academic reading (where you will have an opportunity to deal with your own specialist subjects in the classroom), grammar, pronunciation, and speaking skills. These courses taught in the School where you will be studying your degree programme. You should choose these courses if you are going to study on one of these degree. In most cases it will be possible to transfer from the 10 or 15 week Preparatory or Course A or to one or other of these courses, as appropriate.

Free online course before you come

Students on a 10 or 5 week pre-sessional EAP course are also offered a place on one of our free online courses in living and studying in the UK. Normal entry requirements

International students at the University of SouthamptonEvidence of your existing English Language proficiency is required before a firm offer of a place on any course can be made, and you should arrange to take an approved test of English (normally IELTS or TOEFL) at the earliest possible opportunity. Please send a photocopy of your IELTS or TOEFL to the English Language Admissions Coordinator as soon as you apply for a pre-sessional course.
