Welcome to the New Media and Citizenship Learning Activity
Aims of the Learning Activity
In carrying out this activity you will examine how far new media technologies (in particular the internet) empower citizens. Specifically you will:
- develop an understanding of the nature of ‘new’ media and the effect this has on citizenship
- consider how new media technologies are used by citizens to gain information about politics and other social affairs
- reflect on the effectiveness of these technologies as a means for citizens to communicate with each other and with politicians
- analyse the extent to which new media technologies can affect equality.
Learning Outcomes
Having completed the activity you should be able to:
- recognise the difficulties associated with accessing reliable information on the internet
- consider the importance of interactivity in new media
- understand the effect of, and possible solutions to, differential access to the internet.
