Ocean and Earth Science
Welcome
This site gives examples of the employment and postgraduate courses entered by graduates from the School of Ocean and Earth Science. It has practical information and advice to support your career planning and job hunting.
- During your studies you have developed a range of transferable skills valued by all employers including communication skills - from lab reports and scientific writing to interpersonal communication with a range of people in diverse situations; critical analysis of research and field data; organisation skills - for example by fitting paid employment, field trips and time out into each summer vacation.
- You will have routinely worked in laboratories, with scientific equipment, in 3-D, in more than one scientific discipline, manipulating and analysing data using IT, modelling tools, databases, graphical tools. Look back over your course and module descriptors for inspiration.
- The combination of scientific rigour and practical fieldwork develop a valuable combination of knowledge, thinking and practical skills which are highly transferable to a range of technical and business roles, and working environments.
- Employers, whether for work experience or graduate jobs, expect you to show a professional approach to learning and employment by providing evidence of your skills and knowledge, and specifically how it matches their requirements. So reflecting on your degree and work experience will enable you to appreciate your strengths and give you a database of evidence to convince employers or higher degree providers.
Employability Activities within your degree
Throughout your degree programme you have access to a number of tailored presentations, workshops and drop in sessions providing you advice and guidance on career planning, CV writing and interview techniques. These events are provided by Career Destinations, graduate recruiters and alumni from your degree programme.
Dedicated career roadshows are offered to students annually providing dedicated opportunities for you to network with recruiters and get the support and advice you need from Career Destinations.
All of the career events are designed to develop the attributes you need in today's work place and are developed after consultation with recruiters locally, nationally and internationally within the sector.
As well as events on campus you also have access to a variety of events from across the sector, for example students have recently attended the Geological Society Careers Fair in Nottingham, providing you further chances to find out about the opportunities available to you.
