Dr Felix Eigenbrod joins the School of Biological Sciences
The School of Biological Sciences welcomes Dr Felix Eigenbrod, who took up a lectureship in Ecology and Ecosystem Services at the University of Southampton on August 2nd, 2010.
Felix was previously based in the Department of Animal and Plant Sciences at the University of Sheffield. He explains his work and what attracted him to Southampton.
“My background is in mapping the benefits humans gain from nature – ecosystem services - and measuring the effects of human activities on wildlife populations. I was attracted to the position because of the breadth of research activity in pure and applied ecology that can be found not just within the School of Biological Sciences, but also other Schools, including Geography, Civil Engineering and Computer Sciences. Successful mapping of ecosystem services requires a very interdisciplinary approach so this range of expertise was immediately appealing.”
“I plan to set up a research program in collaboration with my new colleagues in the University looking at the distribution and interactions of different ecosystem services and biodiversity at scales ranging from Hampshire to globally.”
Felix is part of the Ecology and Environment Research Group within the School of Biology, and has also joined the University-wide Living With Environmental Change theme.

Dr Felix Eigenbrod BSc, MRes, DPhil
A landscape ecologist by training, I am broadly interested in quantifying the often complex interactions between biodiversity, society and ecosystem services, and at identifying the spatial and temporal scales at which tradeoffs and interactions occur. In my research I use GIS and different modelling techniques to develop novel methodologies for linking existing environmental, social and biological datasets to fully understand the processes underlying the wide range of ecosystem services used by humans, and how human impacts affect global distributions of species. My work is highly interdisciplinary, and I frequently collaborate with specialists in other fields, ranging from biophysical modellers (e.g. hydrologists and dynamic vegetation modellers) to economists and human geographers.
