John Wymer Palaeolithic laboratory

Human Origins research and Palaeolithic Archaeology at Southampton is very well resourced. The John Wymer Palaeolithic Laboratory is a large teaching and research space dedicated to our MA and to post-graduate research.

The laboratory is the focus for MA teaching, dissertation research and preparation. In addition CAHO holds its seminars and discussion meetings in the laboratory. CAHO welcomes a wide range of UK-based and international speakers every year, giving seminars on a wide variety of topics. These seminars are open for everyone, and normally take place at lunchtime on a weekly basis during term.

The John Wymer Palaeolithic Laboratory also houses a number of specialist Palaeolithic libraries including the Ruth Charles Library, large sections of Clive Gamble's library, as well as a vast off-print collection, containing many critical papers of historical importance not available in mainstream journals.

The teaching collections, and the Pob Ogof cave assemblage are housed in the John Wymer Palaeolithic Laboratory. There are computer facilities in the laboratory that give access to the many online journals that are relevant to the subjects of Palaeolithic Archaeology and Human Origins. More computing facilities are available at the Avenue Campus, and in the main Hartley Library.

Specialised Library
