Lynford Quarry, Norfolk

This quarry is the site of an important recent discovery of an elephant butchery site from the Middle Pleistocene discovered by John Lord - a local archaeologist and expert flintknapper. MA students in the summer of 2006 were fortunate enough to visit the site while it was being excavated, guided by John Lord, to see first hand this important location.

We have been fortunate to have been invited to the home of John Lord, one of the most experienced flintknappers in Britain today, to try our hands at flinknapping with expert supervision. Although we were not able to produce handaxes in the fifteen minutes that it takes John, it was exceptionally informative and a real pleasure to watch one of the best knappers at work. We are extremely grateful to the hospitality and generousity of John and his wife for this visit.
